Jan 7, 2016The disk drive is physically working and connected properly to the motherboard. I can open it, put in a disk, see the light flashing and hear it humming. But cds/dvds do not run despite autoplay being enabled. There is no icon for the drive in explorer, but it does appear in device manager as SlimType DVD A DS8A5SH (double listing).
Worked when I had Winblows 7 : Sometimes works edition.

Why Unable To Play Video Or DVDs
Sep 18, 2015Just downloaded the new "free" Windows 10 and found that I cannot play videos or DVD's. Had Windows 8.1 previously and was able to find a fix but no luck so far. I don't want to spend $99.99 on Windows Pro which is what Microsoft says is what I need to do.

Sep 30, 2015I've tried several DVD's. They all work in my MBP and Mac Mini without issue. The DVD's are not showing up in Windows Media Player and I even tried VLC player and they didn't play. I have a bunch of store-bought movies that I've been experimenting with so this isn't like I burned a DVD and did it wrong. Specifically, I attached a PC to the TV so that my SO can watch workout/yoga videos. The DVD's show up in Explorer and I can browse the files on them but not play them.

Nov 23, 2015I have an issue I can't seem to find decent info about. My Win 10 laptop won't see files and folders on DVDs I burned on another box unless I make an ISO on the Win 7 machine first, and then copy it over to the Win 10 machine and "mount" the ISO.
I even tried creating an ISO from an older DVD and then burning it to a new DVD with my Win 10 machine. I still can't use File Explorer on the new DVD. It seems Win 10 on this box won't "see" the files & folders on the DVDs unless the original DVD was burned on this machine. If it is originally burned here, then it works fine. The DVDs I burned on my other laptop using Win 7 can't be "explored" like they used to be on Win 7 and 8.
This isn't an issue with the DVD drive. I've pretty much ruled out drivers, hardware, etc. The drive works fine for everything else. Win 10 recognizes the drive just fine and I can use the drive to create ISOs, burn discs, etc. It just won't "explore" DVDs I made somewhere else - at least not directly from the disc.
I used to do a lot of DVD creating and editing with Win 7 & 8. The processes I've been using are significantly hampered with Win 10. It appears I'm gonna need to get "creative" with my current DVD editing & creation processes.
Apps :: Disk Drive Does Not Read DVDs Anymore?
Aug 17, 2015Since I upgraded to windows10 I am unable to watch movies from a DVD. I can read other kinds of disks just fine, just not movies. For instance, I wanted to watch the sixth Harry Potter movie. So I enter my DVD but my laptop just says there is no disk entered. I thought there was something wrong with my DVD at first. But it works fine in all other devices I have at home. So then I thought the problem must be my disk drive. But then I inserted the bonus DVD of the movie, and this one worked fine. WHAT? How is this even possible, both are DVD's, just the bonus disk doesn't have a movie on it. I tried this with all the harry potter movies we have at home and the same occurred each time, the movie DVD does not work but the bonus DVD (with behind the scenes and whatever) works fine. I have searched all over the internet and haven't found a solution. The only thing I find is people of which their Disk Drive isn't found anymore. But this is not my problem.
P.S.: It's a laptop, the details can be found on my profile I believe. And I wasn't really sure in which thread I should post this. As it isn't really a hardware problem, I don't think it's a driver problem (my pc says drivers are up to date) so I assumed it must be a software problem.
BSOD :: Kernel Security Check Failure When Burning DVDs?
Sep 20, 2015I've been getting the BSOD with the error message KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE (no numeric error code) and have tried to fix myself but with no success. I've attempted to manually update drivers, this appears to make no difference. The BSOD has been happening when I try and burn large files to dvd using the share - burn to disc feature in file explorer. I've read that this particular BSOD can be memory related so was suspecting that, it seems although the computer gets a little overwhelmed then BOOM, BSOD appears.

Oct 3, 2015I've been having this issue for nearly a year now (probably around 9 months). It started after my little sister made me get a virus by her trying to download something onto my laptop. I've since taken it to a reputable computer shop as well as followed instructions from other computer wizs and I think it's no longer there. Issue is, my computer has kind of developed another problem after that. It freezes on it's own sometimes, when I pick it up or even when it's on a desk and immobile. It would also freeze when I play a game sometimes, loud buzzing sound as the game continues in loops I believe. I had BSOD problems earlier this year that was solved (Apparently. I haven't gotten any in about 4-5 months) when I had Windows 7 but this issue still persists.
When it would freeze and I manually turn off my computer and turn it back on, the laptop would sometimes say no wifi could be detected. At all. Not mine, not my neighbors, nothing. I've never really taken it out of the house so I don't know if it'd act the same elsewhere. I would then shut it down and take out the battery for 30 seconds before putting it back in. Sometimes the wifi would work then or I'd go connect it to my Internet Modem and the wifi would start working over there too.
So I'm not sure what's causing this problem. It's not overheating as I had it cleaned less than 4 months ago by a professional. I've had this laptop for two years and I really wanted it to last me at least 4 because I'll be going into an animation program soon and to get a laptop of the same caliber costs $1000+.
Is there anyway I can solve this freezing issue/loss of wifi on my own? I'm thinking of taking it back to the computer shop (they've had a hard time trying to find out what's wrong with it) but I'm sure they'll charge me again and I'm not willing to end up paying a lot to get this fixed. Might as well buy a new one if it costs more than $500 to fix...
P.S. I'm also having issues with my sound card where I'd plug in my headphones and it would work but when I take it out, my laptop would say it's still plugged in. Addtionally, my CD Rom Drive makes a loud sound when I try to skip through CDs and DVDs. Sometimes it won't even skip and just continue making the sound. I don't know how my laptop has gotten to this state as I've taken very good care of it (minus allowing a younger sibling to use it but you live and learn). These issues don't bother me much as I can use a DVD player for my DVD's and the sound issue isn't an issue for me. I don't really care for it since I use headphones 90% of the time or have the sound off.

Jan 26, 2016System that doesn't use the disc drive for dvd's or video disc format is wrong - taking away something that now, you have to pay for. Do the wright thing Microsoft and reinstate the disc media player.

Mar 31, 2016My son and I have recently upgraded our 2-year old Dell 660 Inspiron from Win 7 Pro by doing a clean install of Win 10 Pro to a brand new HDD. As we have been testing out different apps and things to ensure everything is working, we've discovered that AVI files and MOV files will play just fine on either Windows Media Player or the "Movies and TV" app that came with Win 10. However, MPG files will not play - in WMP we just get the audio, and in "Movies and TV" it throws an error.
I've updated the latest drivers from Dell specifically for Win 10, so I don't think it's a hardware issue. As a further point of reference, his laptop, with Win 10 Pro installed, plays these exact same files just fine.
Other than email, my main use for the PC is video editing and if I can't get MPGs to play, I'll probably have to go back to Win 7...which would not be fun.
Bleep After Playing Fsx
Sep 18, 2015i have fsx delux with acceleration on steam and pc dvd iupgraded to win 10 my pc is 2 months old self built for fsx. i have fsx on steam or none steam version when i close the program everytime i move my mouse it continues to bleep so i have to shut down restart pc then pc is fine it only does this on fsx not any other game at all. i have a high spec gaming tower all drivers are update i have install pc version only it still bleeps so i uninstalled it even the main fsx files from c drive then bought fsx on steam it still bleeps my pc was reformatted as a fresh pc with out old windows 8.1 in drive c.

Jan 15, 2016I have recently upgraded to Windows 10 and since then whenever I am launching a multimedia app like VLC, Paint.net etc., the brightness gets increased to 100%. I don't want so high brightness and it's so annoying to reduce it everytime. How to disable this, I want my brightness fixed at 85%. Also note that my Adaptive Brightness is turned off as I have already checked.

One thing I found very useful with MagicISO was the ability to have several ISO files that were always mounted, but it appears that I can't RMB on an ISO file and tell Windows 10 to always mount this file.
Is there some trick that will allow me to mount (a few) ISO files automatically when I login (or when the systems boots)?
C Drive Automatically Getting Filled Up
Oct 19, 2015I had upgraded to win 10 about two months ago. for the last two days my c drive is getting filled up automatically. It is in excess of 90 gb and yet yesterday It was full. I tried to use online support and checked on dosv files etc but to no avail. I then decompressed all files using the option under properties on right clicking the c drive and got 25 gb free this morning. I am watching uselessly as it has already reduced to 19 gb and is reducing fast with no activity and no internet down load etc from my side.

Aug 2, 2015After upgrading to Windows 10, my PC will not go to sleep automatically nor will the displays turn off after the specified time (10 minutes). If I put it to sleep manually from the Start menu, it will go to sleep and usually stays that way until manually woken up. I had no issues with my PC going to sleep in Windows 7.
So far I've tried:
Unchecking "Allow this device to wake the computer" on my NIC
Disabling password required when the PC wakes up (saw it on another thread so figured I'd try it)Updating all drivers (chipset, graphics, etc)Updating my motherboard's BIOS
Disconnecting my keyboard and mouse
Checking powercfg /requests (its blank - everything is none)
Intermittently Not Sleeping Automatically?
Aug 10, 2015My power scheme is set to lock the screen after 4 minutes, turn display off after 5, sleep (S3) after 10 (hybrid sleep disabled). Auto-sleep usually works a few times after reboot, but then fails: no screen lock, no display off, no sleep. No new apps have been launched in the meantime. Then, perhaps an hour later, auto-sleep starts to work again for a few times, then fails again. (Manually suspending or resuming the PC always works properly.)
Powercfg /requests consistently lists nothing in any category. Powercfg /lastwake just shows the keyboard activity that I used to wake the computer from its last sleep. The network adapter's wake-this-computer box is deselected in the device manager. Media streaming is not enabled. There is no homegroup. Dism scanhealth and checkhealth show no errors. Checking the system drive and all data drive shows no errors.
I've tried restoring the default power settings for all plans, then reestablishing my own settings, but the problem persists.
Manually putting the PC to sleep is not a viable workaround, in part because the PC wakes for some scheduled tasks (especially overnight) and needs to go back to sleep (which it isn't doing).
Latest updates, drivers, and BIOS are all installed. Motherboard is ASRock Z77 Extreme4.
There are tools to show what keeps a PC from sleeping when idle (powercfg /request), and to show what wakes an idle PC (powercfg /lastwake). But are there any tools to show what keeps an idle PC from being recognized as idle?
C Drive Filling Up Automatically

Jul 31, 2015I've configured several e-mail accounts in Mail. Three of them are Microsoft Outlook accounts and two are Gmail accounts. For each account I've set Mail to:
(a) Fetch new messages as they arrive
(b) Download messages from all time
There is no other special setting.However, Mail never seems to fetch anything automatically as they arrive. In fact, I always receive my e-mail on my phone long before they show up in my inbox. As a test, for most of yesterday and today I waited about an hour after messages arrived in my phone, and each time I found that until I had manually synced the account, the messages did not appear in Mail.
Some additional information : I am certain that my Internet connection is working, because I get Skype messages in real time; I am sure my computer has the correct drivers, because not only did I install everything from the manufacturer's site, I even ensured that there were no errors in Device Manager; my computer has plenty of RAM and CPU horsepower. There is no reason for Mail not to sync except if it has a bug.
Automatically Running Facebook
Nov 27, 2015For the last couple of days, when automatically running Facebook of of my START apps list, after Facebook opens for a while it just cancels out without any warning. No problems before this. However, if I run Facebook thru the Internet after signing "ON", no problem. I uninstalled the Facebook from START and re-installed it from Windows Store and it installed with no problem. However, when I try to run it automatically from START, the same happens. It runs for a while, and whenever it feels like, it just kicks me out and cancels. As I stated above, this has only been happening the last two days.

Jan 25, 2015It is fitting that I should start this discussion on the new Win10 site. With the latest update to 9926, I finally got the sleep menu to show up (updating the graphics driver) but the computer will not automatically go to sleep at the appropriate time. The other versions worked. I doubt this will last as I expect more updates to fix this but so far, the usual suspects have been tried and it is non functioning.
The sleep button and the power button set to sleep work fine. So far, nothing has woken it up but I have a sneaky suspicion that Homegroup now wakes up the computer when another machine asks for its shared folders.
