I just downloaded Windows 10 today. I can't see any icons, desktop, find the start menu or anything else. I read it does dual-monitors but I can't figure out how to switch when I can't see anything. I have an Alienware computer. Should I call Dell or talk to Microsoft support? The picture isn't clear but that's my desktop.
View 6 RepliesI had an issue with Firefox where if I clicked the Taskbar icon, the program would not show on the desktop. HOWEVER, if you hover over the icon, it showed what it would look like if it were expanded. I restarted it in safe mode and got it to work again.
Just now WORD is doing the same thing. I had 3 WORD windows open and then they stopped showing at some point. However, they appear if I hover over the icon (set to "always combine, hide labels" in taskbar). I can see that they are in the same state that I left them, but they won't show on the desktop if I click them.
So right now, WORD won't open at all, even though the icon thinks it is open. This is really a problem since I need to finish some work with WORD ASAP.
all I have is 'desktop'. Everything else is under that. But all the pics I've seen of windows 10 show 'this PC' as the top level link. I would much prefer that. "desktop' ends up being twice in the tree, and removable media twice as well. Well, actually desktop is right inside my user folder too!
View 5 RepliesSuddenly today I started my PC and got bootmgr missing error. Tried scan disk and bootrec commands to fix to no avail. Used a repair disc and ran startup repair but nothing works. I went to option to reset the PC and it is showing two versions of windows. One says"Windows 10" and the other "Windows 10 Home". Don't understand what happened here. This is a week after the latest build update and my PC was running fine up to this point.

View 8 RepliesSince upgrading to Win 10, I have noticed that with most (but not all) system shutdowns and restarts, it result in a nice red X with the 'Windows was not properly shut down" Clicking on it gives no clues, just says "The previous shutdown at [time] on [date] was unexpected.
There is no other indication other than what the Reliability Monitor reports. I would not even be aware there was an issue. The PC starts as normal with no errors on every boot.
There is an update available for windows update. But when i try windows shows no updates found with an error code 8024402F ... Why am I not getting an update for Windows 10?
View 1 RepliesThe Windows Photo Viewer was perfect for me in Windows 7 so I got it working on Windows 10, too. The new Photos software that came with Windows 10 is useless to me because it doesn't zoom, at lease I can't figure out how as of yet. I just want to keep things simple with the Windows Photo Viewer.
All was OK until I calibrated my monitors & at about the same time there was a Windows update. After calibration the monitors looked much better. But when I opened the Windows Photo Viewer I noticed all photos looked extremely dark. All other photo viewing software shows the same photos normal. I just assumed it was the Windows update that caused this but it wasn't that.
Today I have figured it out that the problem is Windows Photo Viewer software is somehow clashing with my monitor color profile. If I remove the .icc profile, the photos look normal using Windows Photo Viewer. Once the monitor profile is returned, they go back to too dark. As I said, other photo viewing software is not affected by this profile, just Windows Photo Viewer.
I don't have a clue how to fix this other than returning to the default profile which would wreck my Photoshop business. It just seem odd that the color profile only effects the Windows Photo Viewer this way & not other programs.
I have read elsewhere that installing Windows 10 top of Windows 7 results in a windows.old folder, which does seem to exist on my computer.
Instead, I have, on the desktop, a folder, Windows 7, which seems to contain many of the files, etc., perhaps all such data, that were in Windows 7, such as all of the folders under Documents. I just looked at Documents in the Windows 7 folder, which even shows a file that I put into Documents in Windows 10 on 3August2015. In fact, looking at the folder,it looks just like what I see when I use the Windows 10 File Explorer from the icon on the task bar.
PC hang when I load it after the last update. The desktop is showed and PC start to load item from the toolbar ( the one next the clock). 2 application are loaded then system is hanged. Cursor is displaying a small circle and that it

PC has 3 hard drive.
I did the chkdsk and SFC /scannow on each drive, No error found
Win 10 diagnostic report error found, but when I look in the Event manager, I don't see what is the problem.
This seems to be a tedious process of going to the task view, then finding the window and right clicking and sending it to another desktop.
Is there something simpler? I was expecting a right click on the taskbar would give this option, but it does not. Is there a keyboard shortcut perhaps?

When I start some programs the program will start up normal, It shows up as running in the task bar I can even alt-tab and see the running program but I cant see the program on my desktop in order to interact with it. I have tried cascading all my windows it still will not show up. Ive tried right clicking the program on the task bar and selecting "move" that does not work. This only started when I installed windows 10. Some of the programs that wont show up are.

I created shortcuts for my most used Windows 10 apps/tiles to my desktop, but some of the shortcuts have blank icons. I re-copied some and they stuck, but a few others are still blank after several retries. i.e. Scan and Store are blank but Calendar, Calculator, Photos, Weather and Alarms have the correct icons.
View 1 RepliesI cannot find my taskbar (it's not hidden, no) and the back button doesn't do anything. I've restarted my computer. All the windows I've opened since this happened (last night) cannot be made any smaller, they're all maxed out across my screen and can only be minimized into nothing.
I don't recall doing anything, I just closed my laptop to do something for a bit and when I opened it, it was like this. I also could not use my keyboard at all, until I restarted.
I have the windows spotlight theme on my lockscreen and i like them. I was wondering if it was possible to somehow get them on my desktop as well?
View 7 RepliesSo I've recently bought an SSD Drive soley for the purpose of running Windows. The original Hard Drive was a 2TB Samsung drive that I have since formatted and using for Storage only. Installed Windows 10 on the SSD and the machine is working great, boots up in aound 10 seconds from turning the machine on.
Now heres my issue. For some reason if i turn my PC on and do nothing it will show the message no operating system found press ctrl, alt + del to restart. This is because its still looking to my original 2TB Drive to boot up. So basically I have to tap F something everytime i turn my machine on and select the SSD from the list.
Here is where things get weird. I have gone into the bios and have the choice of what the machine boots up with, so again i can select my SSD. The problem is the section where I can set the boot order default is only showing my 2TB Hard drive and the Blu-Ray drive, the SSD doesnt appear in that list. So it appears in one time boot options but not in the boot priority list so I cant set it as the default Drive.
I had shortcut icons on the windows classic desktop in windows 10 and now they have disappeared and I cant get them to come back.

I find this interesting because Microsoft was so behind with their mobile builds vs the desktop. Could this mean Microsoft has played caught up internally with the mobile build?
I don't know, but I would like to start seeing universal updates to universal apps, instead of apps updating separately for desktop and mobile.
Just thought it was interesting to bring up - especially since we all want more stable versions of Windows 10 mobile, maybe it means the core OS is even closer to the desktop version.
Without any third party software: Can I with Windows 10 set new windows to open on the monitor (with dual monitor setup) from which it was launched?
By default Windows opens a new window on the monitor on which it was used last. So if I close file explorer on monitor 1, the launch it from monitor 2's start menu, it will still open on monitor 1 because that is where it was last active, even though I launched it from monitor 2.
