MSSQL 2005 Eval Upgrade To Production?

May 4, 2006

Looking for the best practice to upgrade a soon to expire MSSQL 2005
evaluation server to a standard production server? I understand
the license requirements. I have good backups of the
databases.

Should i just pop in a MVL mssql2005 cd and perform an in place
upgrade? Or completely remove the eval version and install clean?
Will i have to redo any SQL users i have added on this server?

Thanks for any help. If anyone has a link to a KBB article i
would be happy to read that on my own as well, i just havent been able
to locate one.

SQL Server 2005 Standard Eval Upgrade To Licensed Version

Sep 13, 2007

Hi All,

I have been using the 180 day evaluation version of SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition and I have my license key now for the purchased version. I read on the Microsoft site I am able to upgrade to the non-trial version without uninstalling the eval version. But for Standars Edition Microsoft states:

"... If upgrading to the fully licensed version of SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition, Workgroup Edition, or Developer Edition, it is recommended that you uninstall the 180-day trial version of SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition before installing the fully licensed version of the other editions..."

Is there anyway out where I don't need to uninstall my eval database server?
If it is necessary to uninstall eval version, then what is the best way to preserve all my current databases?

Thanks,
Sumit

SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Eval Upgrade To Licensed Version

Sep 7, 2007

We have been using the 180 day evaluation version and I have my license key now for the purchased version. I read on the Microsoft site I am able to upgrade to the non-trial version without uninstalling the eval version. But it doesn't tell me HOW to do it. I was expecting a menu option, maybe on the About Screen of Management Studio to enter it. (How naive is that?) Is there a simple way to tell the Eval version I am now licensed?

TIA
Chris

Upgrade From SQL Server 2005 Eval Copy To SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition

Jul 23, 2007

I have a SQL Server 2005 evaluation that has already been installed and setup on a server. I believe it originally had a 180 day eval. There have been numerous databases and users added as well as maintenance plan created...

The eval was put on the machine as an interim solution while waiting for paper work and order processiing things to happen. All the paperwork and ordering... have been completed and I now have the real SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition license key ....

I am very new to SQL Server and need to determine ...

1. Can I update the eval copy to become permanently licensed?

2. Would I want to upgrade the eval to permanent? Will I lose any capabilities by keeping the current eval setup?

If it is reasonable to keep the eval setup

3. How do I go about entering the license key to make it permanent?

If it is necessary to install the new Standard Edition...

4. How do I install it while maintaining the already defined databases, data, users, maintenance plan...

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Upgrade From 32-bit Eval To 64-bit Enterprise?

Jun 21, 2006

I have a 32-bit evaluation edition installed on my 64-bit server. I have purchased a license for 64-bit enterprise edition. Can I upgrade from the 32-bit eval edition to the 64-bit enterprise edition? If I can - should I? Is the better approach to install a new named instance of the 64-bit enterprise edition - the 32-bit eval edition is an unnamed instance. All guidance is appreciated.

Thanks.

Upgrade From Eval To Full Version

Aug 3, 1999

Hi Guyz

We are currently running with Eval 120day limit SQL6.5 SP4 and now wish to upgrade to the full version. We have now purchased the full version but whenever we try to "upgrade" the server all we get told is that we should "Use control panel to add or remove components" or we are told that we should "use service pack 3 to update". I can only assume that this message is refering to Add/Remove programs in the control panel but there is no reference to SQL here.

Any ideas how we can upgrade to the full legal version without loosing our SMS data?

Very best regards to all

MSSQL 2005 SP2 Upgrade Fails - DB Engine

Access To MSSQl 2005 Upgrade Challenge With ASP Web Application

Feb 26, 2008

To whom it may concern,

I have developed a web application using ASP 3.0 with a Access DB 2002 backend. I have decided to recently to upgrade the database to SQL 2005 but I am having issues that I cannot work out because I am new to MsSql Language. It appears that the FORMAT function in Access does not work in MsSql ( does not recognise the function ) along with some of the PIVOT and TRANSFORM calls (coming up with "Syntax error near "..."") . Please see the below code. The areas that are showing up as errors when the application is run are highlighted in red.

Thanking you in advance
Darren

Still Can't Install SQL 2005 Eval

Apr 24, 2007

Since it's been about a week and I haven't gotten a response for my last question, I will restate my question here.

Should I uninstall my Visual Studio, Student Version?
I had installed Visual Studio 2005, student edition, prior to installing the SQL 2005 eval. I've read that there can be a conflict with MSSQL Express which may have been installed along with my Visual Studio install as there was a SQL Configuration program on my computer before I installed the SQL 2005 trial version.

Deploying MSSQL 2005 Express DB To MSSQL 2005 WKGP Errors

Sep 29, 2006

DB is developed on local computer with MSSQL 2005 Express. My host is on MSSQL 2005 workgroup. Are they compatible, because I am getting errors? Is my approach wrong?

I have tried several approaches.

A) I created a backup of database on my local, then placed a copy on the server. Then I tried to restore through Server Management Studio. I get this error.

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio

------------------------------

An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo)

------------------------------

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

The backed-up database has on-disk structure version 611. The server supports version 539 and cannot restore or upgrade this database.

RESTORE FILELIST is terminating abnormally. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 3169)

B: I also have tried copying the database. I put it in the same path as the other databases that can be read with server management studio on the server. Then, tried to get to it through server managements studio and it did not appear. So I tried to attach it. Then I received this error:

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio

------------------------------

Attach database failed for Server 'MROACH1'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)

For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=9.00.2047.00&EvtSrc=Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.ExceptionTemplates.FailedOperationExceptionText&EvtID=Attach+database+Server&LinkId=20476

------------------------------

BUTTONS:

------------------------------

C: I have also tried opening the Database, and back up file through Server Management Studio. without success.

D: I also tried Windows and Software update at microsoft update, but no updates were recommended for Version on Server.

I'm surprised this is so hard. My original data base was created in same family of software. 2005 MS SQL Express. I could use some direct help from someone experienced with this. Am I doing it wrong or are the DB versions incompatible.

Getting Started With SQL Server 2005 Eval Version

Oct 16, 2006

I have been running SQL Server 2005 Express with the Management Studio Express.  I just downloaded and installed the Eval (Trial) version of SQL Server 2005 but have not been able to get it working.  Here are a couple of questions:1.  Is there a potential confict with having both versions on my machine.  I don't want to uninstall express since I may have to do back to it in 180 days.2.  Is there a program comparable to the Management Studio for the Eval version of SQL Server 2005?3.  How do I access the Eval version?  I found the folder where it installed on my C drive but don't know what to do with it.Thanks for any help you can provide.

Eval Between SQL 2000 32bit And SQL 2005 64bit

Oct 9, 2006

Hi

I just started a new job and one of my first assignments was to determine and prove the improvement between SQL Server 2000 32 bit and SQL Server 2005 64bit extension. (Itanium may come later but for now we will live with x64)

I have used SQL 2005 before but only with a fresh install and a new application built from the ground up. Now we want to upgrade our present databases to 2k5. In a previous test by another DBA, he found the SQL 2005 ran slower. However, he realized that he was using SQL 2005 32bit on Windows 2003 64bit. Now we have everything in place, here are the steps I have accomplished so far.

Loaded Windows 2003 64 and SQL 2005 64.
Made a copy of an existing database from a SQL 2000 32 bit
Attached this database to the new SQL 2005 server. However, I keep the compatibility at 8.0.
Updated the statistics and backed the db up.
Had another DBA run a Profiler trace on the production server.
Replayed the trace on the new server.

My problem is this doesn€™t seem to give the information I am looking for. First, we were only looking at queries over 5 minutes and only looking at things from a duration standpoint. We are going to change this. Second, even though I created a template that looks like the one used on the production server, it is not using it.

So how do I compare performance on this 64bit server verses the 32bit SQL 2000. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Importing Data Into SQL Server 2005 Eval Version

Jun 6, 2007

Just installed SQL Server 2005 Eval version and Management Studio does not display any Import/Export functions to load data into tables of an existing database. I thought that this feature was turned off only in Management Studio Express.

Upgrading MS SQL Server 7 SP4 Standard To 2005 Enterprise (Eval Edition)

Jun 6, 2006

Hello, you all,

I did all the stuff necessary for the upgrading (the Upgrade Advisor didn't say anything special), but the Setup says the following:

"
Name: Microsoft SQL Server 7.00.1063
Cause: The update is blocked. You can obtain more informations in the online help "Versions- and editionsupdates".

Editions problem:
The update is blocked because of rules for the editions update.
"

Is it possible that an upgrade is not possible with the evaluation edition? Or can there be another cause?

Thanks in advance

Oliver

Install SQL 2005 Ent Eval Edit On Vista X64 User Not Found ...

Jul 14, 2007

Details: OS Vista Ultimate (64-bit), Harware: Intel Core Duo 2 2.13 Ghz, 4 GB RAM, Serial ATA WD Raptor 150GB.

Installed all the service packs for Vista. All hardware configured and running. IIS is running, .Net 2.0 is running. During the install I get green flags across the board for all items. Regardless of what I install, when it gets to installing the DB Engine it throws an error:

The error was [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]Windows NT user or group 'MARK-PCSQLServer2005MSSQLUser$MARK-PC$MSSQLSERVER' not found. Check the name again.. Refer to the server error logs and Setup logs for detailed error information.

I have tried not using the built in system account locally on my machine which I am logged into as with Admin rights. I have tried creating another Admin level account, and using it. I have tried using the accounts listed above specified as "domain account", and have always specified Multi Mode Authentication and set a password for the "sa" account.

No matter what, I get the error above.

Does The Sql Server 2005 EVAL Distribution Support Run Of Packages Under DtExec?

Mar 23, 2006

I believe I have made a complete install of Sql Server 2005 on my dev. machine, including all client tools, and can run SSIS packages from the dev. environment.

However DtExec refuses to run any package and always throws the "insufficient version" error (as does the "RunPackage" component, probably for the same reason).

I have repeatedly attempted to find something more to install from the Sql Server 2005 eval release that will allow DTExec to run without the "insufficient version" error, but can find nothing else to install from the eval. The install wizard (and the "change" wizard) indicates everything is installed and will not build a list of any additional components to install.

Are we sure that DtExec will install and run from a sql server 2005 eval distribution?

Licenses are in the pipeline (not that pipleine) but we need to start testing our SSIS solution in the meantime.

p.s. Kudos to the dev. team, it really is an excellent tool!

Thanks,

Ken

New MSSQL Directories Created After Upgrade

Apr 14, 2008

Hi,
I recently upgraded my Standard Edition SQL2005 to Developer Edition SQL2005 for the default instance (MSSQLSERVER) only. I used the following command line setup.exe commands to do the job -

start /wait setup.exe ADDLOCAL=SQL_Engine INSTANCENAME=MSSQLSERVER UPGRADE=S
QL_Engine PIDKEY=OHNOYOUCANTSEETHISSORRY SKUUPGRADE=1 /qb

then

start /wait setup.exe ADDLOCAL=Analysis_Server,RS_Server INSTANCENAME=MSSQLSERVER UPGRADE=Analysis_Server,RS_Server PIDKEY=OHNOYOUCANTSEETHISSORRY SKUUPGRADE=1 /qb

(Of course I used my real PID)

I then re-installed the SP2 patches. Everything seemed fine afterwards, until I tried to process a recent cube project in Visual studio. The DATEDIFF() function failed. So I found the problem (in this forum) that the VBAMDX assembly for my SSAS session was referencing an empty bin folder, and therefore could not process VBA functions in MDX.
Now I can fix this by editing the relevant XML file in the DATA folder and restarting my SSAS service but I am concerned about all the other stuff that could be referencing old folders.

Some of the settings e.g. DATA is still in C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2OLAPData
but the bin programs are now in C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.6OLAPData

It seems that I now have 3 new installation folders - MSSQL.5, MSSQL.6, MSSQL.7 as well as the usual .1,.2,.3 since upgrading my Edition.
Why did it make these? What else may be out of wack on the SQLServer services? How can I make sure everything is properly setup?

I guess the problem could be that there is another instance called OFFICESERVERS on the computer (a WIN2003 server) which was created by the SharePoint installation by someother guy..

adv(thanks)ance

How To Apply Licenses And Convert From Sql 2005 Enterprise Eval. To Standard Edition

May 9, 2006

I have been testing and developing with Sql 2005 enterprise eval. Now ready to deploy, and we have purchased a "device" and 5 "cal" licenses for each box. What is the recommended procedure for applying Sql 2005 "standard" licenses to existing boxes having 2005 enterprise eval. installed? I do not want to delete and re-install sql server if at all possible!

Thanks!

Import/Export Causes Fatal Error- In Server 2005 Eval. Version

Jan 27, 2006

Have the 2005 Enterprise Evaluation version. Trying to import data from a flat file to DB table. Tried running wizard from designer studio and from creating a data flow in SBIDS

Either way I am able to setup and start excution and then bombs with a fatal error.

"SQL Server Import and Export Wizard has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Asks to Debug or close.. Tried installing on 2 other machines and having same issue. Tried several different data files and tables same issue.

Does anyone know if this is a bug? Am I missing something with permissions?

Thanks

Access 2002 To MSSQL Upgrade Challenge With ASP Web Application

Mar 6, 2008

To whom it may concern,

I have developed a web application using ASP 3.0 with a Access DB 2002 backend. I have decided to recently to upgrade the database to SQL 2005 but I am having issues that I cannot work out because I am new to MsSql Language. It appears that the FORMAT function in Access does not work in MsSql ( does not recognise the function ) along with some of the PIVOT and TRANSFORM calls (coming up with "Syntax error near "..."") . Please see the below code. The areas that are showing up as errors when the application is run are highlighted in red.

Thanking you in advance

Darren

Creating Index In MSSQL 2000 From MSSQL 2005

Mar 24, 2008

Hi,

I am a bit new to the MSSQL server. In our application, we use so many SQL queries. To imporve the performance, we used the Database enigine Tuning tool to create the indexes. The older version of the application supports MSSQL 2000 also. To re-create these new indexes, I have an issue in running these "CREATE INDEX" commands as the statements generated for index creation are done in MSSQL 2005. The statements include "INCLUDES" keyword which is supported in MSSQL 2005 but not in MSSQL 2000.

Ex:-

CREATE INDEX IND_001_PPM_PA ON PPM_PROCESS_ACTIVITY

(ACTIVITY_NAME ASC, PROCESS_NAME ASC, START_TIME ASC, ISMONITORED ASC)

INCLUDE

(INSTANCE_ID, ACTIVITY_TYPE, STATUS, END_TIME, ORGANIZATION);

Any help in creating such indexes in 2000 version is welcome.

Thanks,
Suresh.
