Just downloaded and installed mssql 2005 sp2 on one of our servers
All components upgrade apart from the database engine. After the first upgrade i rebooted then tried to update the db engine again it failed for a second time.
Below is the error from mssql setup, any help would be nice!

I am trying to upgrade SQL Server Express 2005 Report Server to SQL 2005 Standard and it fails with the following error:
SQL Server Setup did not have the administrator permissions required to copy a file: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.8Reporting ServicesReportServer ssrvpolicy.config. To continue, verify that the file exists, and either grant administrator permissions to the account currently running Setup or log in with an administrator account. Then run SQL Server Setup again.
After I click OK on the message, this whole path where the upgrade is bieng installed dissapears C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.8Reporting Services. The error is a bit missleading because the file that it is trying to copy rssrvpolicy.config does appear in that upgrade folder so I am not sure why it would try to copy a file that has already been copied.
I was able to upgrade the Database Engine instance fine but can't upgrade Reporting Services due to that error. I have verified that the account that ran the setup had the administrator permissions. Your prompt reply to my question would be greatly appreciatted.

Looking for the best practice to upgrade a soon to expire MSSQL 2005 evaluation server to a standard production server? I understand the license requirements. I have good backups of the databases.
Should i just pop in a MVL mssql2005 cd and perform an in place upgrade? Or completely remove the eval version and install clean? Will i have to redo any SQL users i have added on this server?
Thanks for any help. If anyone has a link to a KBB article i would be happy to read that on my own as well, i just havent been able to locate one.
I have recently upgrade from MS SQL 2000 to MS SQL 2005. The maintenance plan disappeared. Although the jobs are still around and running. What issues might arise from this? Thanks..
I have developed a web application using ASP 3.0 with a Access DB 2002 backend. I have decided to recently to upgrade the database to SQL 2005 but I am having issues that I cannot work out because I am new to MsSql Language. Hi, I've just tried to install SQL Server 2005 Standard and I'm getting an error that I can't find any information on. In the log, I find Error 29503. A message after it indicates that it couldn't start the server.
I have clients that have the MSDE version installed and we need to upgrade there program to the MSSQL 2005. Is there an easy way to convert the data? Should or Could I uninstall MSDE and than install MSSQL2005 WorkGrp? Will there data be affected? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!
I have installed SBS 2003 Premium with Exchange 2003 SP1 and now I want to install SQL server 2005 workgroup edition.
Heres what I noticed during setup, following the steps of the Server 2005 Workgroup Edition instructions, starting with Upgrading the Sharepoint instance of WMSDE.
Preparing the http://companyweb website: Step 4. I should make a backup of the data directory within program filesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL$SHAREPOINT directory. However there is no data-directory there, so nothing to backup there. This is probably the reason for all the rest of the issues, however what does it mean, why is there no such directory present? I checked before doing the sql install that by going to http://companyweb I did indeed land on the sharepoint internal website.
Rest goes all normal, until : Attaching the databasefiles to the new SHAREPOINT instance of SQL server 2005.
Step 4.: go to MSSQL$SHAREPOINTdata. Not only is there no such subdirectory now, the whole MSSQL$SHAREPOINT directory has in fact now disappeared. So steps 4 till 6 cannot be performed now.
Then further to Enable full text search in Windows Sharepoint services Step 2. Remark: I get the error message as described there, however the solution would be to start the SQL server (Shareoint service. However that service is up and running
Furthermore when I go to http://companyweb now, I also get the errormessage indicating no connection can be established with the configuration database.
When I check for services, I find that the whole MSSQL$SHAREPOINT service has disappeared from the list of services.
If I search for updates with Microsoft or Windows Update it notifies me to upgrade SQL Server Express to SP2. After the download the installation fails. The reason seems to be that Microsoft Update downloads SP2 with the wrong language:

DB is developed on local computer with MSSQL 2005 Express. My host is on MSSQL 2005 workgroup. Are they compatible, because I am getting errors? Is my approach wrong?
I have tried several approaches.
A) I created a backup of database on my local, then placed a copy on the server. Then I tried to restore through Server Management Studio. I get this error.

B: I also have tried copying the database. I put it in the same path as the other databases that can be read with server management studio on the server. Then, tried to get to it through server managements studio and it did not appear. So I tried to attach it. Then I received this error:

C: I have also tried opening the Database, and back up file through Server Management Studio. without success.
D: I also tried Windows and Software update at microsoft update, but no updates were recommended for Version on Server.
I'm surprised this is so hard. My original data base was created in same family of software. 2005 MS SQL Express. I could use some direct help from someone experienced with this. Am I doing it wrong or are the DB versions incompatible.
Hi, I recently upgraded my Standard Edition SQL2005 to Developer Edition SQL2005 for the default instance (MSSQLSERVER) only. I used the following command line setup.exe commands to do the job -
I then re-installed the SP2 patches. Everything seemed fine afterwards, until I tried to process a recent cube project in Visual studio. The DATEDIFF() function failed. So I found the problem (in this forum) that the VBAMDX assembly for my SSAS session was referencing an empty bin folder, and therefore could not process VBA functions in MDX. Now I can fix this by editing the relevant XML file in the DATA folder and restarting my SSAS service but I am concerned about all the other stuff that could be referencing old folders.
Some of the settings e.g. DATA is still in C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2OLAPData but the bin programs are now in C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.6OLAPData
It seems that I now have 3 new installation folders - MSSQL.5, MSSQL.6, MSSQL.7 as well as the usual .1,.2,.3 since upgrading my Edition. Why did it make these? What else may be out of wack on the SQLServer services? How can I make sure everything is properly setup?
I guess the problem could be that there is another instance called OFFICESERVERS on the computer (a WIN2003 server) which was created by the SharePoint installation by someother guy..
Mysql database provides a storage engine called "MERGE".A "MERGE" table is a collection of identical tables that can be used as one.(Identical meaning same column name, column width, column order etc.) .
The advantage is you can split a really huge table like LOG tables, STATS tables into seperate smaller tables but would still be able to make queries on them like a single table. More details, can be got from here:
I am trying to upgrade a default instance of MSDE to Sql Express SP2 using command line parameters. The upgrade keeps failing with the message that another instance of SQL Server exists with that name. I am using the following parameters to indicate the upgrade:
UPGRADE=SQL_ENGINE INSTANCENAME=MSSQLSERVER
It appears to be doing an install rather than an Upgrade. Anybody have any ideas why it is not executing the UPGRADE parameter?

I can't install the SQL Server 2012 Express version with tools downloaded from [URL]
I'm getting the following error:
Error installing SQL Server Database Engine Services Instance Features Could not find the Database Engine startup handle. Error code: 0x851A0019
I'm trying to install a new stand-alone version with a default instance but always getting this error. From the features I'm installing the database engine services (not the replication), all the tools, only the basic management toolds and the SQL Client connectivity SDK.
Further in the installation I'm choosing the Windows authentication and in the list of SQL administrators I've already tried to install as current user but also as System. Both with the same error result.
Two servers are configured with Windows 2008 / SQL server 2012 utililizing Always-On for HA. We need to upgrade both servers to Windows 2012 / SQL Server 2014 with minimum downtime(Time for Always-On failover). The upgrade to SQL 2014 is straight forward with for minimum downtime. The Windows upgrade(2008 -> 2012) is the problem. From what I have observed and read in blogs. The Windows node to be upgraded must be removed from the Windows cluster before the node can be upgraded to Win 2012.A Win 2008 and Win 2012 node can not reside in the same cluster. If this is true then the only option I can think of is to dump the DB on WIN 2008 server and restore on Win 2012. This is an outage(time it takes to dump and restore). Is there any other method to upgrade these two nodes utilizing Always-On of some other method without downtime?

Does enabling/disabling Data Execution Prevention have a performanceimpact on SQL 2000 or SQL 2005?For SQL best performance - how should I configure for:Processor Scheduling:Programs or Background servicesMemory Usage:Programs or System Cache
I am a bit new to the MSSQL server. In our application, we use so many SQL queries. To imporve the performance, we used the Database enigine Tuning tool to create the indexes. The older version of the application supports MSSQL 2000 also. To re-create these new indexes, I have an issue in running these "CREATE INDEX" commands as the statements generated for index creation are done in MSSQL 2005. The statements include "INCLUDES" keyword which is supported in MSSQL 2005 but not in MSSQL 2000.
Ex:-
CREATE INDEX IND_001_PPM_PA ON PPM_PROCESS_ACTIVITY
I have an SSIS job that selects rows from a Sql Server table and inserts them into a table on an AS400 DB2 instance. This process has been running correctly for many months. Last week, the AS400 operating system was upgraded from V5r3 to V5r4 and since that upgrade, the SSIS job is failing on the insert step with the following error:
OLE DB provider "DB2OLEDB" for linked server "BKL400" returned message "SQLDA or descriptor area not valid. SQLSTATE: 07002, SQLCODE: -804".
Msg 7343, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
The OLE DB provider "DB2OLEDB" for linked server "BKL400" could not INSERT INTO table "[BKL400].[BKL400].[MM4R4LIB].[INV911WK]".
The insert is in an Execute SQL task and uses a linked server definition to access the AS400.
As I said, this process has been working well for many months until the OS upgrade. Any idea on what is causing this and how to correct it will be Greatly appreciated!
connecting to a SQL Server Instance. I have a SQL server DB on a server having an Instance not running on the default port. Let's say ServerAInstanceA has the services exposed on Port 12345. When I'm trying to connect to ServerAInstanceA without specifying the port number, while I can connect from one client machine (ClientA), I am unable to connect from a different client machine (ClientB).On a side note, when I provide the port number, I can connect both from clients A and B. My question is, when I do not provide the port number, why is one client machine able to connect while the other isn't?
I've got SQL Server 2014 Developer installed, and working. After rebooting, the event log looks like it's working fine. However, ever since I uninstalled Visual Studio 2013 Premier and installed Visual Studio 2015 Professional, both with SQL Server Data Tools, whenever I try to start SQL Server 2014 Management Studio, I get "Cannot find one or more components. Please reinstall the application."Is there any way I can avoid uninstalling SQL Server?
I managed to solve this, based on a recommendation (at URL...). I ran SQL Server's setup.exe, and chose Repair, and now it appears that all is well.
Ben writes "I have a sql script that doesn't function very well when it's executed on a SQL 2000 server.
The scrpt looks like this:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- USE [master] GO IF NOT EXISTS (SELECT * FROM master.dbo.syslogins WHERE loginname = N'SSDBUSERNAME') EXEC sp_addlogin N'SSDBUSERNAME', N'SSDBPASSWORD' GO GRANT ADMINISTER BULK OPERATIONS TO [SSDBUSERNAME] GO GRANT AUTHENTICATE SERVER TO [SSDBUSERNAME] GO GRANT CONNECT SQL TO [SSDBUSERNAME] GO GRANT CONTROL SERVER TO [SSDBUSERNAME] GO GRANT CREATE ANY DATABASE TO [SSDBUSERNAME] GO USE [master] GO If EXISTS (Select * FROM master.dbo.syslogins WHERE loginname = N'SSDBUSERNAME') ALTER LOGIN [SSDBUSERNAME] WITH PASSWORD=N'SSDBPASSWORD' GO GRANT ADMINISTER BULK OPERATIONS TO [SSDBUSERNAME] GO GRANT AUTHENTICATE SERVER TO [SSDBUSERNAME] GO GRANT CONNECT SQL TO [SSDBUSERNAME] GO GRANT CONTROL SERVER TO [SSDBUSERNAME] GO GRANT CREATE ANY DATABASE TO [SSDBUSERNAME] GO USE [master] GO IF EXISTS (select * from dbo.sysdatabases where name = 'ISIZ') DROP DATABASE [ISIZ] GO USE [SurveyData] GO exec sp_adduser 'SSDBUSERNAME' GRANT INSERT, UPDATE, SELECT, DELETE TO SSDBUSERNAME GO USE [SurveyManagement] GO exec sp_adduser 'SSDBUSERNAME' GRANT INSERT, UPDATE, SELECT, DELETE TO SSDBUSERNAME ---------------------------------------------------------------
I need to be converted to a script that can be executed on both MSSQL 2000 and MSSQL 2005.
I was wondering if somebody there could help me with this problem?!
I've been tasked to move our production databases on MSSQL 2000 to 2005. I've supported MSSQL since version 6.5 and performed migrations to successor versions.
Current Environment is MSSQL 2000 32-bit with current Service Packs.
I've performed mock migrations on Test servers upgrading all Production instances simultaneously from MSSQL 2000 to 2005 32-bit. The Test environment is identical to Production minus server name, IP etc. Also I have a separate server with MSSQL 2005 installed where I use the DETACH / ATTACH and BACKUP / RESTORE method for migration / acceptance testing. There are approximately 30 databases totaling 70 GB. This has gone as expected and fairly successful. Vendors have been coordinated with to update code and staff for acceptance testing.
I'd prefer going directly to MSSQL 2005 64-bit instead if possible due to memory benefits etc. This is where I'd like some feedback prior to borrowing a 64-bit server for testing.
Upgrade options:
1. Is it better to migrate from MSSQL 2000 32-bit to 2005 64-bit via: a. DETACH / ATTACH b. BACKUP / RESTORE c. Is one method more advantageous relating to the end result? 2. Regarding XP clients, have issues been experienced with the default SQL Server driver or is an alternate recommended for XP clients to connect to a MSSQL 64-bit server databases? 3. If you have performed this migration and have relevant experience please pass them along.
We have installation of Dbase Engine and SSIS that is PRODUCTION, and want to replace with newer hardware. In "the old days", we built "boxname_new" and installed SQL with "sqlname_new", took PROD users off-line, and quickly renamed original boxes/SQL and new boxes/SQL to original name, copied data and off we went with upgrade.
NOW, the "renaming" option for SQL tools is not supported, but with re-installation.
Has anyone developed game plan steps for accomplishing hardware upgrade, including SQL environment swap with MINIMAL downtime for PRODUCTION environment? Can you share?
We are performing a SQL 2005 SP1 upgrade from SQL 2000 on our Windows 2003 SP1 Standard Edition.
When we run the upgrade, we got a error "Upgrade Advisor Return -1" as a pop-up window.
When we run the Upgrade Advisor separately, we get this error :
===================================
Common Language Runtime detected an invalid program.

We are running a test upgrade form sql 2000 standard edition 32 bit to sql 2005 developer edition 32bit. Followed through all the steps and specified the account(SA priveleges and currently used by the 2000 version) and is the local admin on the box for the services and the setup seemed to move fine, except for when it got to the point of installing database services - This is the error message that I got:
