SSMS Truncating Result Text In Select Query

Apr 20, 2015

The value of one of the columns in my table is 14000 lines(678913 characters). The datatype of that column is varchar(MAX). I am doing the following select query but its truncating the results.

select value -- this is truncating the text.
from dbo.GUISETTINGS

The length is shown as below when I do the query:

SELECT DATALENGTH(VALUE) from dbo.GUISETTINGS -- return 707951 as the length.

I even tried running the query below but still the value is getting truncated. However, if I right-click and select "Save Results As" a file, then it shows all the lines/characters fine.

select value, cast(value as text), cast(value as varchar(max))
from dbo.GUISETTINGS

How can I get whole column value ?

SQL Server 2008 :: SSMS Truncating PowerShell Output?

Jun 3, 2015

When I execute the following command, I get the output truncated to 79 characters, including three dots (as an ellipsis, I suppose).

EXEC master..xp_cmdshell 'powershell.exe "Get-ChildItem D:Databazepaleontologieprilohyverejneg -filter g417*.* -recurse | select Fullname | out-string -width 255"'When I execute the core command directly in Powershell, whether the text or ISE version, it works correctly, with or without the out-string -width command.

Get-ChildItem D:Databazepaleontologieprilohyverejneg -filter g417*.* -recurse | select Fullname | out-string -width 255What does it take to get SSMS to not truncate my output strings?

Result Sets Using Select In Query Anlyzer Vs BCP Vs Select Into

Jul 9, 2002

When I run simple select against my view in Query Analyzer, I get result set in one sort order. The sort order differs, when I BCP the same view. Using third technique i.e. Select Into, I have observed the sort order is again different in the resulting table. My question is what is the difference in mechanisim of query analyzer, bcp, and select into.

How To Direct Query Result To A Text File

In SQL7 Query Analyzer we want the results of a SELECT statement not to be displayed on screen but written to a text file.

We assume that in the tons of sp_ and SET statements there should exist
one where output file can be defined.

Transact SQL :: SELECT On Column Name From Query Result Set In Same Query?

May 9, 2015

I have a column colC in a table myTable that has a value (e.g. '0X'). The position of a non-zero character in column colC refers to the ordinal position of another column in the table myTable (in the aforementioned example, colB).

To get a column name (i.e., colA or colB) from table myTable, I can join ("ON cte.pos = cn.ORDINAL_POSITION") to INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS for that table catalog, schema and name. But I want to show the value of what is in that column (e.g., 'ABC'), not just the name. Hoping for:

COLUMN_NAME Value
----------- -----
colB        123
colA        XYZ

I've tried dynamic SQL to no success, probably not executing the concept correctly...

Below is what I have:

CREATE TABLE myTable (colA VARCHAR(3), colB VARCHAR(3), colC VARCHAR(3))
INSERT INTO myTable (colA, colB, colC) VALUES ('ABC', '123', '0X')
INSERT INTO myTable (colA, colB, colC) VALUES ('XYZ', '789', 'X0')
;WITH cte AS
(
SELECT CAST(PATINDEX('%[^0]%', colC) AS SMALLINT) pos, STUFF(colC, 1, PATINDEX('%[^0]%', colC), '') colC

[Code] ....

SQL Server 2K Truncating Text Fields At 255 Chars

I'm running SQL Server 2K (sp3a) and when I run the following query (inquery analyzer):SELECT id, LEN(ForeignWord) as Length, ForeignWordFROM WordsWHERE Language ='Thai' and LEN(ForeignWord) > 300ORDER BY Length descI receive the following results:id Length ForeignWord------- ----------- -----------34756 445 เ&#35...truncated at 25534839 412 เ&#36...truncated at 25537613 350 โ&#35...truncated at 25537808 315 โ&#35...truncated at 25538140 315 โ&#35...truncated at 255(The ForeignWord field is defined as varchar(1000))Note that even though the server says that the lengths are in excess of255 characters, the results are all truncated at 255 characters.I read that SQL Server 6.5 and 7.0 had some issues related to nativeaccess versus OleDb or ODBC, but this is Server 2K patched with thelatest updates.Any idea why my varchar fields are being truncated?-- RickHere is my table definition:CREATE TABLE [Words] ([ID] [bigint] IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL ,[Language] [varchar] (50) NOT NULL ,[Module] [int] NOT NULL ,[Lesson] [int] NOT NULL ,[EnglishWord] [varchar] (1000) NOT NULL ,[ForeignWord] [varchar] (1000) NOT NULL ,[Note] [varchar] (2000) NULL ,[Military] [tinyint] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_Table1_Military]DEFAULT (0),[Supplemental] [tinyint] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_Table1_Supplemental] DEFAULT (0),[SoundFileName] [varchar] (1000) NULL)

Help With (Pivot/Cross-Join???) Query To Select A Result Set

Jan 20, 2005

I have information on clothes in a table that I want to select out to a result set in a different structure - I suspect that this will include some kind of pivot (or cross-join?) but as I've never done this before I'd appreciate any kind of help possible.

Current structure is:

Colour Size Quantity
-----------------------
Red 10 100
Red 12 200
Red 14 300
Blue 10 400
Blue 12 500
Blue 14 600
Green 10 700
Green 12 800
Green 14 900
Green 16 1000

I want to produce this result set:

Colour Size10 Size12 Size14 Size16
-------------------------------------
Red 100 200 300 0
Blue 400 500 600 0
Green 700 800 900 1000

There could be any number of sizes or colours.

Is this possible? Can anyone give me any pointers?

Thanks in advance

How To Limit The Select Query Result Based On Start And End Parameter

May 23, 2001

I am a newbie to SQL Server.
I have a problem, in filtering the records returned by a query.
I have a table which contains 1 million records, it has a user defined primary key which is of character type.
The problem is i need to filter the output of a select query on the table based on two parameters i send to that query.
The first parameter will be the starting row number and the second one is the ending row number.
I need a procedure to do this.

For Eg:
MyProc_GetRowsFromBigTable(startRowNo,endRowNo) should get me only the rows in the specified range.

Thanks in advance,

ORDER BY t.topicid ASC,th.lastpostdate DESC

Text Box Content As Select Query Parameter

May 17, 2008

Hello, I'm learning about asp .net and I've created a simple application with SQLServer integration. I have 3 text boxes where I can insert text and then use them as parameters for the Select query string of a SqlDataSource which is then bound to a DataGrid. My question is: Is there any default configuration I can use with the SqlDataSource which do not add a given field as a parameter to the WHERE clause if the text box content is empty ? Sure I can sweep through all my text boxes, check if they're empty and dynamically build the WHERE clause with correct parameters, but is theres a built-in, more elegant way to solve this ?Thanks in advance.Arashikage

End Result Is Main Query Results Ordered By Nested Result

May 1, 2008

As the topic suggests I need the end results to show a list of shows and their dates ordered by date DESC.
Tables I have are structured as follows:

SHOWS
showID
showTitle

SHOWACCESS
showID
remoteID

VIDEOS
videoDate
showID

SQL is as follows:

SELECT shows.showID AS showID, shows.showTitle AS showTitle,
(SELECT MAX(videos.videoFilmDate) AS vidDate FROM videos WHERE videos.showID = shows.showID)
FROM shows, showAccess
WHERE shows.showID = showAccess.showID
AND showAccess.remoteID=21
ORDER BY vidDate DESC;

I had it ordering by showTitle and it worked fine, but I need it to order by vidDate.
Can anyone shed some light on where I am going wrong?

Transact SQL :: Select From View In SSMS Doesn't Return All Rows

Jun 8, 2015

I am using SQL 2014 RTM (may be it's time to upgrade).

I have the following view:

create view [dbo].[SiriusV_Max4SaleList]
as
select m.id as Max4SaleId,
mt.[Description] as [TypeDescription],
CAST(m.[type] as tinyint) as [Type],
m.start_time as [StartTime],
m.end_time as [EndTime],

[Code] ....

I am thinking I may want to remove CAST for department, category, item later on as I don't really care if these columns would be defined as key for my EF model, but I do want to search by these columns. Anyway, this is my current view.

I executed the following select statement once

select * FROM dbo.siriusv_max4saleList where department like 's%' or category like 's%' or item like 's%'

And I believe I got 29 rows initially. However, when I execute this statement now I'm getting just 13 rows. If I execute just the department like 's%' I am getting 0 rows although I can see in the first result a row where department has s in in.

I guess I keep it here since I've created the message already but now I figured out why I am not getting the expected result. I used the condition like 's%' and not like '%s%' which application is doing.

No Available Databases In A New Query In SSMS 2005

Mar 7, 2007

When I create a new query window in SSMS 2005 (SP2) , I do not have any available database in de SQL Editor pane. Though in the Object Explorer window below, I can access all objects of all databases. The only way to query a table is by using the 'Open Table' feature in the Object Explorer window, then right-click on Pane-->SQL .

I also can open a stored procedure, but not modify it as the SQL Editor pane is disabled.

The SQL-Editor pane is available for all the other servertypes (Analysis, Reporting, Integration).

All services all started.

I re-installed completely SQL2005 and SP2 : nothing changed.

What am I missing ???

Versions = Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 9.00.3042.00

SQL Developer Edition 2005 (Service Pack 2)

Windows XP Pro 5.1 (build 2600 Service Pack 2)

Any help is welcome !!!

Remove Space Between Columns In Result To Text

Sep 20, 2006

Hello

When you set the results from a query to text, very often you end up with a format like:

job_id name
---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Is there a way to get rid of the extra space between two columns? Sometimes it's more than the width of my screen between columns

Thanks!

SQL 2012 :: Pasting Query Results Into XL From SSMS

Mar 13, 2014

Previous to 2012, grid results from SSMS queries pasted into Excel beautifully and were easy to format.in 2008, The results from this query pasted into a spreadsheet with the query contained in a single Excel cell:

(sample - not the whole script)
select top 300
Avg_CPU_Time
,Total_Physical_Reads
,convert(datetime,Last_execution_time) as Timestamp
,Stored_Procedure
,Query_text
from dbadmin.dbo.History_CPU_IO_ByQueryAndSP

This was wonderful. I could deliver to developers wonderfully tidy reports on query resource usage with timestamps along with which stored procedure the queries came from.

Can't do that in SSMS 2012. Try it. It's a disaster. The Query_text, when pasted, spreads across multiple Excel columns, including the ones designated for other data. The result is totally unreadable.how to make the query_text stay in it's own cell? I've tried converting query_text to varchar and ntext. Same results.
