Performance :: Computer Freezing At Boot

Aug 5, 2015

I've been trying to fix this for a while, but I have had no luck. My sister for her birthday got a new laptop (Dell Latitude E6420 Intel i5 2540m at 2.6 ghz). I did the free Windows 10 upgrade for her, and when the computer is starting from a shut down, it goes to a black screen with the mouse, and the mouse is frozen. There is nothing I can do but hold down the power button to shut it down.

Performance :: Freezing Upon Waking Computer And Booting - No BSOD However

Aug 27, 2015

Just to preface this I have not received a BSOD when this happens so I hope I'm still posting this in the correct location. However my laptop just freezes completely and I have to do a hard shutdown (holding the power button until it shuts off) whenever I wake my laptop up from sleeping or even when I cold boot it.

I have checked Event Viewer and I see that I have a couple of recurring errors, the first being:

"DCOM got error "1084" attempting to start the service lfsvc with arguments "Unavailable" in order to run the server:
{08D9DFDF-C6F7-404A-A20F-66EEC0A609CD}"

Wit the second being: "The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start because of the following error: The dependency service or group failed to start."

However I am able to boot into safe mode just fine, even safe mode with networking and everything behaves normally. I have tried a clean install as this started happening after doing the upgrade from Windows 7 so I figured a clean install would clear up the issue if it was an issue with it upgrading.

Performance :: PC Freezing / Crashing

Jan 19, 2016

I have an HP Pavilion 500-123a PC running Windows 10 which has been freezing and crashing frequently.I have attempted several diagnostic and fix options about which I have posted to this forum before, though the difficulty thus far is unresolved. In particular sfc/scannow does not complete; halts at 56% with the message Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

I also attempted a Repair Install using the Media Creation Tool iso file. This was initiated in the administrator account (PC has two accounts) and got to 97% when it failed with the error message We couldnt install Windows 10, The installation failed in the SECOND_BOOT phase with an error during PRE_OOBE operation error code 0x8007002C-0x4001E.The diagnostic software PC Health Advisor only came up with 2 registry issues, without specifying further. The Dism tool was OK however reporting. The component store is repairable. The operation completed successfully.Given that the PC is still freezing/crashing at this stage I am perplexed regarding how to arrive at a diagnosis and fix and, again,

Performance :: Laptop Keeps Freezing And No Response

Nov 3, 2015

My laptop keeps freezing and nothing responds. I start task manager and nothing is running it reports! I can't even power off except fordoing ctrl alt delete and restart it. It's becoming an everyday occurrence. I am thinking in going back to windows 7. I wish Microsoft would have used 7 as a model to make another OS. In my opinion 7 is the best OS that Windows has made since XP. Is there anything I can do before I do a full reinstall? Can I use an Acronis image of my old c drive on my old laptop? I think it's a definite no, but I won't know until I ask.

Performance :: New Custom Build - PC Freezing Within Games

Feb 10, 2016

My new custom desktop build is around one month old now. I am experiencing issues while gaming, for example AC Syndicate.

Sometimes I get an BSOD, but thats very rare. Also, the BSOD is freezing as well, so Windows is not even generating dump files. It only happened one time. That one time I collected the dumps to start a thread here: New Custom Build - BSOD within Games - Windows 10 Forums

But as BSOD crash analyst axe0 said, without dumps we cant analyze anything... What has been done?

- Reformatted PC, then I thought the issue is solved, but it came back...
- All non-microsoft services are disabled
- All startup entries are disabled
- Memtest ran around 12 hours, no issues
- Used HWMonitor to check temperature while gaming and freezing, no heat issue detected.
- Ran Furmark around 3 hours, no freezes...
- Replaced GPU, no changes...
- BIOS is up2date, but there is a new BIOS which I tried to install, but BIOS said "cannot read file"

ASUS
--> Currently running on v1104, published on 2016/01/14
--> most up2date BIOS is v1105, published on 2016/01/20 - not able to install it

I forgot to add that I did the upgrade from Windows 7 originally and had the problem so I figured it might have been an issue with the upgrade itself causing some kind of problem so I did a clean install of Windows 10 Pro on it and the issue still existed afterwards as well.

Computer Keeps On Freezing Or Restarting When Playing Games

Aug 12, 2015

Ever since I installed Windows 10 on release, I have been having problems with my games. Before it was just games like Counter-Strike 1.6, Half-Life 1, Half-Life 2 / EP1 / EP2, Left 4 Dead or Garry's Mod that froze my computer or sometimes it would just say "AMD driver has stopped working and successfully recovered". Last night it happened when I was playing Sonic and SEGA All Stars Racing and I was just trying to finish a race when the screen turns black and brings up a message saying "Sonic and SEGA All Stars Racing has stopped working". This has never happened to me before and I thought it had something to do with plugging my Xbox One controller in when Windows already started up when usually I just leave it plugged in before turning on my computer. I launched the game again and had Spotify playing music at the same time. I needed to check something on the internet and I pressed the Windows key and opened Google Chrome then everything stops and the music just freezes and has a constant stuttering sound. I think it could of been that the graphics card stopped working but it didn't recover.

I run Sonic and SEGA All Stars Racing in these settings:

Resolution: 640x480 @ 60Hz
Widescreen: Yes
Vertical Sync: No
Language: English
Texture Resolution: Low
Shadows: Off
Low Detail Models: One Player
Soft Particles: No
Motion Blur: No

I run Garry's Mod in these settings:

Resolution: 1440x900
Aspect Ratio: Widescreen (19:10)
Advanced Settings: Everything as low as possible except for Texture Detail which is at Medium

Computer Specifications:

OS: Windows 10 Home 64 bit
RAM: 2GB
Graphics: ATi Radeon 3000 Graphics 256MB VRAM
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 245 Processor @ 2.9GHz

Performance :: Not BSOD But Constant Freezing With Drive Spiking At 100% Usage

Aug 28, 2015

Background: For the past few weeks or so I was on W8.1 on my SSD and Arch Linux on my SSHD. However now when loading up Arch I get a { DRDY } error presumably on the SSHD, and W8.1 crashed very soon after logging in. I noticed that sometimes that the computer does not freeze until I open up a game (Total War 2). TW2 had been working fine previously. I would go ahead and reset/refresh my main W10 drive but I'm not sure if that's the issue. I have never gotten a BSOD just a freeze then sometimes black screen with a mouse.

What I've tried: I consistently virus scanned with Malwarebyte's and Defender to find nothing.I hoped upgrading to W10 would fix the issue, but it did not./sfc scannowSMART check (no issues)check Task Manager/used Proc Explorer (or variants) can not see cause of disk usage spike

What I believe could be the issue: I want to say the drives are failing, but I'm honestly dumbfounded.I've read it's possible to the SATA cables.

Tried creating another user account, and so far no issues with the new account. Also added some logs, if more are needed I can add them.

TW2 crashed it again

Random Computer Freezing - Need To Hard Restart / No BSOD

Feb 10, 2016

Two different scenarios that happens when my computer needs a hard restart

My computer freezes completely (literally no movement on the screen or anything, it's not slow it's frozen). And an extremely loud buzzing sound comes out of my headphones or speakers. The same thing as above except without the loud buzzing noise.

I saw that this happened to someone else who had both the speakers and the headphones plugged in at the same time. However, scenario #2 just happened to me 10 minutes ago even though I only had my headphones plugged in.

I built this computer six months ago and it's the first computer I've ever built. I assume it's a driver issue but I can't really pinpoint the problem since no BSOD appears on the screen.

I'm attaching the zip file required.

Drivers/Hardware :: Computer Freezing - Linked To Sound

Dec 7, 2015

For a while now, I have had problems with Windows 10 every now and then where all of a sudden my computer will freeze for seemingly no reason.

Previously I posted this forum thinking it was my NVIDIA divers (because I didn't actually need them). BUT, today my computer froze again, and I have noticed something odd but common with all the times it has frozen. Allow me to explain:

I was on Facebook today searching through as you do, and my small (not smart) phone started ringing. As always, my acer speakers pick up this signal for some reason and start buzzing. I turn my speakers off and answer my phone, walking away from the computer. After about 5 mins, I come back to find my computer frozen.

This interaction with speakers seems to be common in the freezing of my computer. I can recall other times answering a call and coming back to find my computer frozen. Also, if I am watching a youtube video, and my computer freezes whilst the speakers are on, the speakers will make a loud noise (this hasn't happened so recently, can't quite remember noise to describe).

This MIGHT be the cause, however, this is still unknown, if even linked! This sound problem may even be linked with my previous NVIDIA problems (which I thought were causing this freezing) as on previous thread.

Major Computer Malfunction / Multiple Errors / Constant Windows Freezing

Feb 9, 2016

I recently built a computer about two weeks ago. Everything had been great up until today. These are the following error messages that occur about 10 seconds after seeing the windows 10 desktop and all the way until the starting of windows.

Bad pool caller
Bad pool header
System service header
Dpc watchdog violation
Kmode exception... (I couldn't get the rest)

I have about 10 seconds of desktop before a error message or a freeze. I've tried safe mode and it locks up, ive tried trying to repair windows from the boot disk and it loads forever or locks up. Maybe the two week old hardrive has failed?

Computer Freezing - Processor 100% Network Adapter Turned Off / Occasional WHEA Blue Screens

Oct 16, 2015

My laptop, an Acer, has been freezing multiple times a day recently. Sometimes I get a blue screen eventually that tells me there's been a WHEA error, sometimes none of that. Yesterday, I kept staring at the screen for a while instead of restarting, and eventually it recovered. I could see the processor activity climb to 100%, and that interrupts claimed up to 14% of the activity. Afterwards, the network adapter (Qualcomm Atheros AR956x) was turned off, apparently because of a 'code 12' - 'insufficient available resources'.

That problem was only resolved after a restart. When I shut the computer down, I got a screen telling the computer was being 'prepared' for a long time - sometimes I also see a blue screen showing the installation of updates at start-up, even if none were waiting to be installed. The drivers for the network adapter are up to date, version 10.0.0.318 (apparently dating from May 2015). I'm quite sure this is a software issue - 'chkdsk' doesn't find any problems, nor does 'sfc /scannow'. And a friend of mine with an Apple laptop running Windows 10 (we've never exchanged USB sticks or anything) has exactly the same problem since installing Windows 10 (different network adapter however, and seems to have improved recently).

Performance :: Computer Powers On Itself Every Day At 6 Am

Oct 5, 2015

A note about that complex command on PowerShell, it returned this:

PS D:> Get-ScheduledTask | ? { $_.Settings.WakeToRun -eq $true -and $_.State -ne "Disabled"} | % { $_.Settings.WakeToRun = $false; Set-ScheduledTask $_ }

TaskPath TaskName State
-------- -------- -----
MicrosoftWindowsUpdateOrchestrator Reboot Ready

I can't take this anymore. I find it useful to put the PC on sleep or hibernation because I have a lot applications open for work and I find it useful not having to close all down every day and reopen the next day. But lately, either I put the PC on sleep, hibernation or even I shut it down, it wakes up 95% of the times at 6 a.m.

Performance :: Cannot Boot From Hibernate

Oct 13, 2015

This is on a fresh Windows 10 install, using a 60 GB SSD and a pair of 1 TB HDD's. No folders were moved off the SSD (C:) outside of what Windows supports. (That is, I moved all user folders to the HDD that I was allowed to, and installed all programs to the HDD that I was able to.)I enabled hibernation via the Power Options > System Settings section in the control panel. The C: drive has 25 GB free space; well more than enough for hiberfil.sys to work normally. When hibernating, the system appears to behave normally and hibernate as it should.

When booting from a hibernated system, the computer POSTs normally and then brings up the Windows 10 logo and loading screen briefly before powering off very suddenly. I have to turn on the system again, and when I do, it boots normally but the hibernation state is lost.I've attempted disabling fast startup, which seems to have no effect. I've updated my video drivers to 15.9 beta, but I recall this being a problem on 15.7 as well. Full system specs are in my profile. This machine was running Windows 7 in the past before upgrading, but I had to run a fresh install of Windows 10 after encountering some problems. (So the system is currently on a fresh install.) Google is also currently unable to deliver any relevant results for this problem. Windows Update reports being up to date.

Edit: Additionally, this has never been a problem on Windows 7. The SSD is in decent condition too, and has not exhibited any problems.

Edit: This problem was happening on shutdown and restart as well. I disabled fast startup, which corrected the problem when shutting down. Here's a summary of the behavior now:

Shutdown, no fast startup: Able to start up normally without any unexpected behavior.

Shutdown, fast startup enabled: Computer immediately shuts off just after reaching the Windows boot screen. Has to be powered on again and then will boot normally.

Hibernate, regardless of fast startup setting: Same behavior as above.

Conclusion: From my understanding, fast startup acts as a subset of hibernate. Windows 10 is not able to properly hibernate the driver(s) and/or some other system state. I might have to go through the drivers via process of elimination to see what's causing the problem.

Edit: I found the problem!

So despite no BSOD ever appearing, I ran the BlueScreenView utility to view the system dumps. Got the driver IRL not less than or equal error, found that it was from sptd2.sys; the SPTD (a SCSI bypass driver) I installed with Daemon Tools. I found a separate uninstaller for the driver and got rid of it; it's not something I need anyway. (Lots of Google searching will find you these utilities and solutions.)Would be nice if it showed an error or BSOD in the first place! I was about to go whack-a-mole on the drivers, but I would've never found the root cause.

Performance :: Boot Not That Fast

Feb 10, 2016

I have a new configuration (z170 chipset, i3-6320, fast SSD) for my desktop and it boots slower than my laptop (Acer V3-574G (i7-5500) with the same SSD as my desktop). I don't think the i3-6320 vs i7-5500 can explain such difference.First thing is that Hibernation and Fastboot are activated but not working on my dektop PC: command "Get-WinEvent -ProviderName Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-boot -MaxEvents 10 | Where-Object {$_.id -like 27}" gives me 0x0 (cold boot from full shutdown). Parameters ares ok in settings and in registry (hiberboot = 1).I tried using Fast boot and MSI fast boot in the bios: no effect. I tried to enable win10 whql in bios but it is disabled after rebooting, with a warning message saying that my graphic card does not have GOP.So, I'm not able to fast boot due to an "old" hd7750 graphic card ?

This just started happening today I think so I did a system restore, but the problem persists. The only thing I remember doing today was updating my ATI drivers.

Performance :: Computer Starts By Itself When Shutdown?

Dec 1, 2015

Just Yesterday upgraded from 8.1 to 10 with out any problems. But, Unless fast start up is disabled, windows will start by itself a few minutes later after I shutdown. Did not have this problem before with 8.1.

Always had fast startup selected, matter of fact, never had to worry about it, had no problems when shutting down, it stayed off until I turned it on. Now since upgraded to 10, the only solution so far to stop the computer from starting up by itself after shutdown, is to disable fast start.

I can hear the hard drive start but monitor doesn't come on unless I hit the power button on the monitor and even when I do it just comes on for a few seconds and it is blank and it says monitor is going to sleep and shuts off again and if I hit the power button again it will just repeat the cycle.
